Malignant ascites
Accumulation of peritoneal fluid that results from tumor cells invading the peritoneum
In approximately 10% of ascites cases, the fluid accumulation in the peritoneal cavity is due to malignant tumors. The prognosis for cancer patients with malignant ascites is very poor.
While palliative treatment such as paracentesis is commonly used to alleviate the symptoms of malignant ascites, targeting the underlying cause of ascites is the more effective approach.
